Dulux have revealed their colour of the year for 2021 but people on social media can’t help thinking the shade might have been better suited for 2020
It’s no secret that for many people 2020 has been a less than great year.
We’ve been struck with a global pandemic, forced to go into lockdown, separated from our loved ones and lost some of our nearest and dearest to coronavirus.
Many people have also lost jobs and businesses during the last few months.
So it’s fair to say that we can’t wait for this year to be over.
And while Covid-19 won’t just disappear on January 1st, we can still hold out hope that next year might be better than this one.
This hope is something Dulux were keen to inspire when they announced their Colour of the Year for 2021.
Experts from the paint company selected ‘Brave Ground’, a neutral brown/grey shade, as the must-have colour for 2021.
They claimed that the colour “will enable people to draw upon the strength of nature to help them find the courage to embrace the future”.
Further explaining the Colour of the Year choice, Dulux UK’s Creative Director, Marianne Shillingford, said: “The colours on our walls are the backdrop to how we live our life. For many of us, lockdown has served to emphasise how important our home environment has become, it has been the place where we work, learn, relax. It can lift us up, nurture us, comfort us.
“We continue to live through uncertain times. In 2021, the warm and grounding tones of Brave GroundTM will allow us to find certainty in the strength from the very ground beneath our feet, emboldening us to go forward and begin to live again and giving us the flex to adapt to the ever changing circumstances we face.”
Some people were fans of the shade, describing it as “warm”, “calming” and “lovely”, but others thought it a bit “depressing” and said it would have been more appropriate as the colour to represent 2020.
Taking to Twitter, one person commented: “Dulux announces its ‘colour of the year’ – isn’t this what we once called ‘gre-ige’? How very 2020.”
Another compared the colour to “sludge” and wrote: “Yup that’s 2020 for you!”
A third tweeted: “With everything going on in the world you have to admire Dulux’s sense of humour.”
One person seemed to think the colour could have been worse though, adding: “I’m surprised that Dulux’s colour of the year is a snoresome beige and not the unrelenting blackness of the abyss that we’re all screaming into.”
Over on Instagram, interiors blogger @pinkhouseliving wrote an open letter to Dulux about their choice, suggesting an alternative option.
It read: “Dear Dulux, sorry to say but I don’t think choosing the next ‘colour of the year’ to match the s**t show that is 2020 is the way forward.
“If you’d involved me in your selection process I’d have steered WELL clear of anything brown/beige/depressing.
“You’ve gone for Brave Ground (!) because apparently this particular shade of dull brown will ’embolden us to go forward and begin to live again’. Really Dulux? REALLY?
“Surely if we want to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves down we should be looking skywards, not mudwards for colour inspiration? Might I suggest Courageous Cobalt as a much more uplifting alternative? Or… you know.. PINK!”
